Every region of Guatemala has different and unique tourist attractions. On the north of the country is the Mayan Biosphere Reserve, which includes spectacular archaeological sites and Tropical Forest. This reserve has five national parks and three biotopes.
The central region of Guatemala it is form by mountains and beautiful volcanoes. Also have important colonial cities like Antigua Guatemala, and little towns full of ancestral traditions. In this area it is located Guatemala City, with the perfect combination between history and modern life. The highlands of Guatemala have important places for tourism like the unique Atitlán Lake surrounded by majestic volcanoes, the beautiful Quetzaltenango City, the colorful Chichicastenango town, the incredible Cuchumatanes Mountains and more.
According to the WTO (World Travel Organization) to reach sustainability to long term in the tourist development it is necessary to establish a perfect balance between environmental, economical and socio-cultural aspects. Sustainable Tourism must to:
1) Give the best use to the environmental resources, supporting the main ecological process and helping to the biodiversity conservation.
2) Respect the socio-cultural authenticity of the local communities, protecting their architectonic and living cultural assets and their traditional values, and contribute with the intercultural understanding and tolerance.
3) Ensure the long term economic activities, giving to all the sectors socio-economical profits.
Sustainable Tourism has to give a high level of satisfaction to the tourist and being an unforgettable experience, in this way the tourist can be more conscience with the sustainable problems.
